Pension Plan Money for REI

Hi BP Community!

I have a defined benefit pension plan from a previous employer with about 11k and I want to set aside that money for REI. I have a Roth IRA that I could roll it over to and keep the remaining 5k but want to see what other options you guys might suggest. I know I can take out the lump sum and be subject to the tax penalty for early withdrawal. Any help or resources greatly appreciated!
