if I were to get a real estate license in order to gain access to the MLS, would I have to work for a brokerage firm?

It is best you get your real estate broker license, and then you can get access to MLS.

In most states, you need to hold your salespersons license for a minimum amount of time (typically 3-4 years) before being qualified to sit for the broker's exam.
