Earnest money

when putting up earnest money to get a property under contract, if is a good faith gesture signifying that you intend to buy or have/find a buyer... understood. Is this money is to go to the seller via third party? Now as the deal proceeds a buyer is assigned, am I getting the money back through the assignment fee?
