personal cell phone only to start out?

can I get away with just my cell phone starting out or is a business #/fax line necessary to start out?

I second the Google Voice # and if you are looking for a fax service, Unity Fax is $0.99 cents a month.  It's more if you send/receive a facsimile, but for a dollar a month....why not?  I have it for my company and use if more often for non business related things.

As for email - consider outsourcing that too.  I use Zoho for one of my businesses, for $10.00 / mo.  All of this just helps keep your correspondence organized.

I have one phone, my cell. I use it for all my business and personal calls. I can only talk on one phone at a time, and see no need for more.

I might get a google voice line too.  Just so you don't have to give out your personal number. You can forward the google voice to your cell phone.
