Newbie Looking for information from the experienced

As a newbie, interested in starting to create a property portfolio, my interest is to slowly over the next year compile relevant information in regards to the initial set up period before investment actually begins.

Do's and dont's,  relevant people to be making relationships with, companies or organisations to be talking to etc.

I'm from Christchurch,New Zealand if that's relevant.
