How Exactly do people know how the Market is doing?

Hi, I am fairly new to the Real Estate field, and always wondered how exactly do people know how the market is doing. I hear some people saying "Oh yes, the market is doing phenomenal!" But how do they know? I always believed that it was relative to location. 

Also any tips for a person like me starting out?
