Being a Realtor and an Investor?

I want to get a real estate license to understand my market better but the fees to join a brokerage is hefty. (1k for Keller Williams) Since I don't have much money should I start selling houses as a realtor or just focus on wholesaling? My reasoning is that i'm not sure if the $1000 would be worth spent without doing realtor activity, but I feel that realtor/investor activities do not intertwine so it wouldn't be productive. Thoughts/Opinions?

Become an agent, look up smaller firms - a firm like mine in Boston barely has fees. Find someone small that will be pumped to have another agent and spend some time teaching you. Read a bunch of books too.
