Over the short term:

1. Make your credit card payments prior to the reporting date (when the card reports your balance to the credit bureaus) rather than the due date.

2. Challenge any inaccuracies yourself with both debtors and reporting agencies if you have proof.

3. Use an agency to clean up harder late payments and chargeoffs (if you have them). Lexington Law is legit, their service will run you $100 a month, and it will take several months to see results. A lot of the other credit repair services are scams.

4. Pay everything a bit earlier to limit the risk of being late.

5. Lines of credit, especially from local banks or credit unions, are not always reported to all three credit bureaus.

Other than that it really depends on why your score is low.

@Crystal Hammond have you looked at it to see what’s on it? Sounds like a dumb question, but sometimes what’s on the report is incorrect, duplicated (especially the negatives) or simply not even yours!

Most reporting agencies will give you suggestions on what to do to improve your score...will even let you play with it to see what paying off something or taking out another cars will do to your score.

Another option is to contact a lender and have them pull your report and give suggestions.

Steps:1. I would be an authorized user with someone who has good credit.

2. I would then pull up all 3 credit reports and highlight the issues keeping my credit down.

3. Send a letter to the credit bureau stating you want further detail on the specific item keeping your credit down.

4. Apply (or use current card if you have) and keep charging and paying off.

Building a good history is key to a better score.
