Starting out in a non-US country

I am currently living in India and working my way towards immigrating to Canada. I am new to this amazing forum and wanted to know from the experts that how much of the knowledge and experiences shared here are relevant to non-US countries like India and Canada. I understand that the basics of investing should remain the same but is there anything specific (like tax laws, financial vehicles, market conditions) that I should be wary of?  Are there resources available here that someone can point me to?
