LLC. regisitered agent?

In getting an LLC, is it worth the extra money to get a registered agent or does it make more sense to put yourself down as the agent and save the money?

I used legal zoom as my registered agent but in getting my EIN from the IRS, I used my home address. That was the correct thing to do? Does my home address link to my LLC? I hope not.

In CT the registering agent is who will get served the papers in the event of a lawsuit. However the Member & Manager of the LLC are public information and available on the CT Secretary of State website so you are not gaining any anonymity by doing it this way.

In Ohio, and most states I believe, many use registered agents (and attorneys for the filing) to maintain complete anonymity on all LLC documents filed with the Secretary of State.  Many folks choose to do this, making it virtually impossible to find out who owns an LLC short of a court order that might arise in a lawsuit scenario.  So it's a cloak of defense of sorts from prying eyes like plaintiff's lawyers, tenants, or your competition.

Check with your state requirements, but here anyone can be a registered agent, they need not be an attorney. So, you could make you sister a RA. They are the point of contact in the event the state needs to make any inquiry or you are served any notices. If it's an attorney, thier clock begins to run when they open the letter, read it and call you. If you just want to hide out a bit, have someone else be the agent, although you will be shown as an initial incoporating member on the filed Articles, so it may not make much difference. The initial Articles are public record. Flip a coin! :)
