@Jen H. I have had luck putting oil primer on wall paper, followed with latex paint. I have also had luck skimming with joint compound and just going over it with latex. Is quick and easy.

I just have to add that I have had some good success with DIF when removing wallpaper but my best secret is a 1:4 ratio of liquid fabric softener to water. Works fantastic and smells great :). Of course elbow grease is still required.

Adding drywall mud, a coat of primer, and a coat or two of topcoat add a lot of weight to the surface. Whatever you put on the wallpaper, the paste has to hold as well. If the paste holding the wallpaper can't hold the additional products, your whole system will fail.

good advice here. listen to them. when all else fails, tear down the drywall with the paper and put new drywall. it's faster

NOT Advisable. When the paste finally breaks down, off comes your paper along with the skimcoat and paint. Do it right by using a scoring tool, then strip the paper (chemically is easiest, depending on your sensitivities) and make sure that you neutralize the stripper according to the directions on the chemical. Do yourself a favor-- neutralize twice. Good luck!

Sand Wallpaper down?

Is it possible to sand down textured wallpaper (that has been painted over) to a smooth finish, skim coat and then prime and paint?
