How to survive financially while being your own contractor?

Hi!

My partner (@Nick Westberry)  is an Independent Contractor and we are looking to start investing in our little town of Hamilton, Montana.  The possibilities are endless here!  Nick is currently working as a sub-contractor and gets a regular paycheck.  If we purchase a house and he does all of the remodeling work himself, he will lose that regular paycheck.  How do you make up for this?  Is that something that is factored in when you take a loan?

I'm sure this question has been answered but I could not find it.  I would also be very interested in reading material, podcasts, or other resources on the topic.  Thank you in advance, everyone seems really great on here!!
