How do I block a specific BP member?

Question

Nothing malicious here, it's just that someone continually sends out a form letter welcoming every single new member to BP. The problem with the extended greeting is that it contains my keyword and I end up with a with a ton of unwanted mail. Thanks for any help you can provide.

So what if someone connects with you to get your email information and send you spam?? Is BiggerPockets making itself responsible for that????

I solved the problem of blocking a specific person by adding a filter to Gmail to screen for their name.

Bill - You can stop people from sending you a PM, and can also stop users from mentioning you.  If you don't connect as colleagues or don't post in a forum thread that said user posts in, they can't mention you.

Users can't randomly mention someone.

I agree that there should be a way to limit or refuse unwanted contact.

I'm the least of the techies on here I'm sure. But doesn't your email have a block feature?

Saying it's an open forum doesn't seem to cause you to accept unwanted contact simply because you post in any forum. There are options on other sites.

Another issue is the mentions, that is a great feature here, but as this site has grown we have also gotten a few that use it as a tool to harass others, drawing to arguments that often are nothing more than off topic personal slanderous comments. Wouldn't stop a comment from being made but if it were not for the mention feature the offensive comment would probably go unanswered and unforeseen. I suppose the answer is not to click on the mention, but then it appears you were called and failed to reply which is different than being unaware or not being able to mention someone publically, which invokes a response.

My inbox is packed too, so much so I just don't bother going there unless someone notifies me that an email is coming my way.

Blocking someone from either aspect seems would send a message that contact is not desired and they'd discontinue. A no call list seems to be the right of privacy issue, shouldn't have to rely on caller ID to screen calls from unwanted conversations or contacts, IMO.

Hey Robert - There's no way to block a user.  Unfortunately, if the user is using a keyword that you follow, there isn't much you can do other than remove that keyword.  Another option might be to do a daily or weekly digest for keywords so you're not getting a ton of emails.

I read a post from @Joshua Dorkin that said you cannot block people becuase this is a open forum.

He would be able to tell you what you can do in regards to the form letter.
