Mention tool etiquette

I have generally been using the @ mention whenever I am speaking about a particular member such as @Joshua Dorkin . That way other members can click straight to the individuals page and my references don't seem vague or hard to track down.

However should I only use it when wanting to "introduce" the colleague into the conversation or bring the forum to their attention. (Like with Josh above)

I could see the random notification getting old but I know I would prefer to know if/when I am being discussed in order to properly contribute.

What do you guys think?
