Just thought I'd make a suggestion, there's a lot of military people on the site and even more military comments about using VA loan, PM from afar, allowances, and tax situations that are specific to military. Might it be worth it/possible to create a forum under Real Estate Strategies or another area?
We used to have one, but it appeared that interest had waned. If you guys can drum up some more support, we'd be happy to back you up with a rebirth of our military rei forum.
I am a military investor also. Being stationed overseas & in the military makes it difficult at times but I still keep chugging along! On my 2nd flip, own 3 rentals & expecting this year to double the # of rentals I own and flips I have done.
@Chris Mason, laughed at the APO, AE? thats cuz I am a military mutt right now lol. Stationed overseas and no true home except where I grew up (SW Ohio region).
share your thoughts on that post we all saw what josh had said if there was enough interest he would consider bringing the military section back in this thread let's create something here that this time around to make it last. With all the things that has been going on in the military i believe a rather large amount are starting to think about handling their own retirement since it seems like almost daily they take something away.
Just joined this sight today. As I am currently stationed overseas and want to get involved in real estate back in the states. I am in favor of a military sub-forum.
Any progress on getting this established? If a state/geo area can have a forum, it seems a more transient but equally as established group could have one too. Let's see a military forum.
I'm all for a military-specific forum! I'm fairly new to the BP forums (long-time listener, first time caller...). I just listened to the 200th podcast this morning and finally decided to jump on here to see what other like-minded, military types are up to on the site. It's not that I only care about military members, only that, like @Chris Wright mentioned, there are some things like additional financing alternatives through the VA, or unique challenges that many service members might encounter with compulsory relocations, and deployments that are worth some discussion.
I just realized as I sit here pontificating that this post is 10 months old. Has there been a sub forum created and I've just missed it? I'm so excited to learn all of the things! I have so many questions!
@Ben Davis Hey there. I didnt realize this post was from 10 months ago either. I, too, am now wondering when/if anything ever happened with this. I'm thinking since multiple people have asked for a status in recent months that it is not a thing....yet. I have seen a few posts from other military members bringing up specific issues they were facing and getting the information from more experienced (sometimes also military) members who know of or have gone through that situation. We are deep in here. Perhaps we could have a keyword we could use for our posts to key or alert our brethren and sisteren to our posts.
Again, not trying to separate anyone. Any thoughts?
I use keyword alerts for "military"...works for me but yea a military forum might be good but might set a dangerous precedent and where do the admin draw a line on who does/doesn't get a forum?
I like the basic idea, but as @Joshua D. mentioned, there used to be one, and it died out, and I have a strong suspicion why. I'll explain briefly:
Military and veteran investors such as myself have one big advantage over the general public, and that's the VA loan. Once you have used up that eligibility it is no longer of value, and we have to compete with everyone else on the free market, so after the first (or sometimes second) deal, we're no different than any other investor on this site. There are plenty of threads telling you how to use the VA loan on here, but outside of that, we'd be doing other vets/active duty military a disservice by segregating ourselves from the rest of the community.
Before I get too much hate mail from my fellow vets, I'm aware that there are minor issues that civilians don't deal with such as changing duty stations, deployment, renting in military towns, etc. but those issues are better addressed in a regular forum post than a separate category in my opinion.
Sounds good to have a sub-forum section just for military (active, reserve, veteran, spouse) if you could reasonable vet who joins. Military members could easily use the normal posts as well, but this military only forum continues the camaraderie and supports the things that do actually set us apart from everyone else, in a good way...
