What is the function of Voting in the Forum

This may be a dumb question, but its early and I'm old. When I read posts in the discussions there is an option to vote. What is the function of voting?

Thanks for asking, @Rogers Smith . Like the others said, you use it to say thank you or show agreement. I use it to keep track of people I want to send a colleague request to, as well. If I notice I'm voting for the same person frequently (@Mike Cumbie  was someone I found myself voting for frequently) then I send them a Colleague Request.

(It is considered bad form to ask for votes on this forum. If you want them, give great advice.)

I also use it if I agree. If someone gives a reply that is what I would consider spot on, I up vote it. I don't have to post the same thing, it just lets others know that "I agree with the answer given by this poster".

@Mike Cumbie That makes sense. Rather than wasting time (yours and others) replying "I agree" to every post to which you agree, simply vote. I'm getting the hang of this stuff.

Moderators can't see anything special from your vote, nor is there anything related to upper membership. It's really just a quick way of gauging how much someone participates in the forums and how often others found their posts useful. A poster with a high number of votes relative to their post count is probably posting a lot of things others find helpful, and vice versa. But this is only a generalization, and you should always consider advice or information on its own merit regardless of the source. There are some excellent forum members that don't come by often or are fairly new that offer great advice but just aren't active or members long enough to amass high numbers.

@Mindy Jensen are there any functionability features related to the voting mechanic that premium users and moderators can access that us regular users cannot? Do Premium users view biggerpockets a different way?

As I was reading this topic  I was going to ask @Mindy Jensen the same question, then I saw her reply :) A vote tracker would be a good function to add to the forum.
