can't insert formatting any more?

Why is it that [i]italics[/i] work only with the button?

See this post http://www.biggerpockets.com/forums/25/topics/96280-losing-paragraph-formating , specifically Jon's post half way down.

and all the "[ i ]" (without the space between) inserted in the text.

Seems like the formatting should be interpreted and the buttons should work as well.
