I am interested in locating data on what is owed on a mortgage particularly for houses in distress or about to go into foreclosure.  Are there websites that have accurate information?  Thank you.

Kinda depends on what state and even what county that you are looking for. In San Antonio, Bexar county, the mortgage is listed. You can pretty quickly figure out the age of the mortgage. If you figure they stopped paying 1 year ago, you can add that payment on top of the loan balance. You are not going to be 100% accurate, but it helps. With prices going up so fast in the last few years, there should be equity in just about any house that has a 5 year old mortgage and is behind a year.
