Question about Investment property

Elijah Peterson
Posted

Hello to all. I am new to the group and I am looking to find my first investment property. I am currently in the military so I qualify for the Va home loan. With the Va home loan I am required to live in property for a year in you guys opinion is it better to go this route or save up for a down payment and get a conventional loan as a rental property

Hey Elijah,

First, thank you for your service!

I think you're in a pretty good position because the VA loan gives you an option a lot of first-time investors don't have.

If you’re open to living in the property for a year, I’d seriously look into using it as a house hack. If your market allows it, a small multifamily can be a great way to get started. You live in one unit, rent out the others, reduce your own housing costs, and get your first taste of being a landlord.

The conventional route definitely has its place, especially if you want to buy a property strictly as an investment, but I’d be careful about waiting years just to save up a down payment if you already have a tool that can help you get started.

Best of luck to you, and feel free to reach out anytime - my DMs are always open!
