Not a Realtor can I use a lockbox?

Question

I have had Realtors just give me codes to investment properties which makes it nice and easy to tour the property with no pressure. For people I have already worked with I would like to be able to offer the same courtesy. Are there any good lockboxes you guys use? I would rather spend a decent amount and have a high quality unit vs something a hammer could shred. Thoughts?

Ryan Dossey When I was a Realtor a lot of investors would just use the metal lock boxes that had had the 4 digit code.  Master Lock has a pretty good one that is well made for about $35.  I imagine it would take some time to break it open.  But of course if someone is going to go through that trouble they will probably just kick in the door or break the window.

The best are the ones MLS uses but I don't think you can use those without being a Realtor but I might be wrong.  I believe they cost around $100 and can be brought at your local MLS office.

Also, check with your local Board of Realtors, the usually sell lock boxes and they probably are not restricted to Realtors. They may also have older boxes traded in by those that get out of the business and can get a discount. The sly ones may lease the boxes, but here they are sold. :)

The master lockbox is a very good one. I used to use them but seemed to lose one every time I sold a house.

If you use a lot of lockboxes, you can buy a decent combo one from MFS supply for about $10. They supply many REO servicing companies

Ryan, I've seen many Realtors (and others) use the Master 5400D combination keybox you can pickup at any home improvement store. It's what I use on all of my listings.
