Where to find the great deals??

I have just finished my first flip and am looking for my next property. From what I have read Auctions are risky. Buying from the MLS means I have to pay top dollar. How do I find ways to purchase directly from the homeowners who are in trouble with payment or just want out of a house in disrepair?
