Active or inactive real estate license?

In Texas, you can have an inactive Real Estate license.  I'm understanding that an inactive one means that you're not working for a broker.

I'm interested in working towards getting the license but I don't want to work for a broker.  Obtaining the license should provide me with good background for handling my own transactions which I think would be a huge advantage...?
