Work on credit now and get tax returns in place.

An agent and finding a property 6 months out is too early. Interest rates and inventory on the market and what things are selling for 6 months from now might all be different from today.

Yes, I would start interviewing as early as you can to get some insight into expertise that each professional may have, and they may even give some advice that can open up a few new options.

Get your loan in gear so you have funds to buy all set up when you go shopping.

That way you will know your price point to shop at, and also have eliminated some of the "Gotcha's from the loan process.

Hey Luke!

First priority should definitely be getting in touch with a lender to see what you may qualify for. Once you know what that number is you can start reaching out to agents. I definitely don't think 6 months is too soon to start asking agents for help because there are a good majority that may not be the best fit for you or that may not follow up as well as they should. It's a competitive market so I believe the sooner you start the better chance you have finding what you're looking for in your time frame.
