Need help understanding Zoning Laws

Hey Everyone, I am looking into a place in the Los Angeles area that is zoned R2. Its on a 6500ish lot with a 4500ish house on it. Is it possible to turn this into a duplex? As far as I was reading it, it is possible in the right conditions. Am I right to think like this? Thanks for any help. Cheers!
