Evaluating Neighborhoods For Remote Properties

I live in Colorado and am trying to get my foot in the door in real estate investing but it is so expensive to buy property around here. I began looking in the St. Louis area and realize that the prices are pretty low out there. My only concern is knowing whether or not i am purchasing in a safe area or not. Does anyone have suggestions for researching these kinds of details?

I just bought a 4 plex remotely in St. Louis and can give you recommendations on people who I successfully worked with during the process. PM me if you're interested. Always happy top talk.
