How/when the MLS became online

I am looking for any reports, articles,studies or literature regarding the movement of the MLS from a paper system into the system we know today.

It looks like the MLS is a decentralized system. You will most likely have to research a particular region. "As of 2011, there were 883 MLSs in the US" (1).
