How do we create affordable housing for poor people?
How do we create housing that is affordable for the existing citizens of Birmingham and still make a profit?
The current Revitalization is setting market rates far out of reach of most all Birmingham citizens with housing $150k and up. Meanwhile the median income for Birmingham is $31k...30% live below the poverty rate of $25k... and 61% live right above it.
The NEED for an affordable housing market that is not government based is desperately needed.

Birmingham is like all other cities. It's not so much that it's unaffordable. It's a lifestyle choice for many. If you receive full assistance in Alabama, snap-housing-welfare, it's the equivalent of making $40k a year.
Birmingham is in the top 5 cities in the country to build personal wealth because of affordability of all aspects of life.
The only way to do it is to get back to the days when receiving assistance wasn't a career choice. It was designed to be temporary not permanent. It doesn't matter the race or location, it's about choices.
Ben Carson takes a lot of criticism for his plan but welfare to work is needed & long overdue.
Being dependent isn't empowering. It's destructive. It's no different than a needy man or woman. We all run like Forrest Gump away from those people.
They may not be the jobs of glamour but jobs are available. Everyone has to start somewhere so they can end somewhere better. Otherwise, they remain on a dead end road.
