Mixed-Use Development thoughts?

Is anyone here well-versed on mixed-use development? Have you all seen an increase in this type of development throughout the United States? If you have participated in this type of development, what are the strengths and weaknesses? 

I believe this type of development holds the potential to revitalize neighborhoods by encouraging communities where individuals can work, live and play all in the same area. When paired with efficient infrastructure I believe this has the capability to solve traffic issues with a decreased dependency on vehicles to get around. Instead, put an emphasis on safe sidewalks and bike lanes that offer an alternative to driving.
