Cold Call vs Direct Mail

So I've been driving for dollars in my home market(cheyenne, WY) and building a list of distressed single family homes. My question is, once I find the owner via the county assessor site, given the choice to cold call or send a letter/postcard what would be your first choice? My instinct is to cold call but I'm new and wanted to throw it out to you all. Thanks in advance for your help!
