How much to fill in a pool with dirt??

Question

My brother-in-law is looking at a house tomorrow. Has great space inside but needs work and has good size front yard. In back yard there is a back slab porch area where the basement walks out and then a small in ground pool.

In the back there is woods past the pool so no extra yard unless the pool is filled in. The pool is from the 1990's.

How much is it to drain a pool and fill dirt and compact it and put grass on top?? This is in Georgia.

The shallow end is often larger than the deep end.  There are often curved bottoms.  Both of these can make for less volume.  Another way to calculate is find out how many gallons the pool holds.

1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons.
Take the amount of gallons, say 20,000 / 7.48 = 2674 cubic feet.
2674 cubic feet equals = 99 cubic yards.

You could add a bit more for the top of the pool that you don't fill up, but the decking and broken up gunite, plaster, tile etc, should take care of this.

Wayne Brooks - looks like all of Bill Gulley's calculation is a bit off.

Start with size of hole 30 ft x 14 ft x 6 ft (avg depth) = 2520 cu ft

Using 27 cu ft per 1 cu yd, you get 2520 / 27 = 93.3333 cu yd

using 15 cu yd per truckload: 93.3333 / 15 = 6.22 truckloads

expect at least 7 truckloads based on calculations just shown.

A typical triaxle straight frame dump truck is 18 cy's, loose dirt, to meet weight restrictions. Compacted, about 15 cy's.  About 18-20 truck loads.

I have head a sore throat thing going on the last week which has really taken it out of me. I am on the tail end of it where maybe another day and I will be totally clear.

You know I am only doing this residential thing for my brother - in -law as he trusts me and wants me to handle it. It's been so long since I looked at houses everything has changed. Now builders have to us energy efficient mechanicals for new builds and they have to finish out the roads per city codes etc.

Awhile back a lot of this stuff was open to interpretation. I am glad to help my brother-in-law but I don't want to ever have to do this home search stuff again. I remember now why I couldn't stand residential and I love commercial. No drama and it's just about the numbers and the hours aren't crazy.

Oh what you will go through to help out family!! LOL

Boy Joel, you're having a bad day, wide usually is across :)

I'll assume 30' in length and 14 in width. Standard pools are about 9' deep at about a fourth of the pool, tapered, transistion up to 3' deep at about a third, I'd guess and average depth of 6', so about 280 yards or 5 dumps @ $150 a load delivered here for fill, $750. Probably $250 to bust it up to drain. A good grand is my guess.

The stone should/could be salvaged if it's nice, see if a stone place will buy it, it by the ton, not knowing how big the area is probably a couple tons. Might keep it and add to landscaping.

Sell the pump and filter, skimmers, and you might get a couple hundred for the filter/basket and y valve alone. All said and done, with effort and hassel, total cost might be under 500 bucks!  :) my guess!

Yes, I was quoted 4k, but that included a retaining wall, so I would say more like 3k.

Hard to tell from the picture only.

Maybe 12 to 14 feet wide and 30 feet across. This is just the pool and not  the stonework around it. No clue on how deep as we haven't been to the property yet.
