Investing in timberland

Has anyone ever invested in timberland specifically, and if so what is the best way to go about it? For example starting with smaller acreage possibly harvesting the timber and working your way up to larger acreages.

Or is it to much of a hassle to deal with the timber side than just investing in the raw land ?
