Multifamily purchase survey

Hello Everyone,

I understand that surveys are one of the expenses when buying a multi-family property. Is this always a requirement or does it vary? If one was done within the recent past and nothing was built on the property since then, then what is the purpose of getting one? Also, is it just a simple boundary survey or do you have to do topography, too? Thanks!
