Hello, I am in the process of purchasing a well kept 8 unit in West Dundee, IL. 4 - 2 bedrooms, 4 -1 bedrooms, basement laundry room. I have an inspection quote for $1,400. Does this sound like a reasonable number?

@Steven L. - I would call a few different and get numbers and ask questions about what they inspect (lots around here don't step foot on roofs and just look from the ground, which leaves me like WTF, I can do that, what am I paying you tons of money for?! And others (which I typically always use) will crawl through the smallest attics and crawlspaces and some now even have cameras and drones for areas they can't access!) and think of what you really want/need inspected in that sense.
Also, what's the SQFT on that? I would say most SFH in my area (I'd guess we run cheaper than in your area) are 400-500 depending on difficulty and size, so if I try to translate that into 8 units, it seems reasonable, if not cheap?
But I think you need more information about what they do and a few other estimates to know for sure.

When in doubt, I would get multiple quotes. Also, I do not think there is a standard on calculating Inspection pricing. Some companies would charge based on the square footage, some on the condition and some based on the experience of the inspector himself. Again, get multiple quotes.

That seems a bit high. I am a Realtor and investor and have a few names I can pass along. I left messages with them to see availability and price.

Personally, I am more concerned about the quality and experience of the home inspector, than the price of his or her services.
A good inspector can find a lot of issues, and save you money in the long run or back out of a bad deal.
