How do I find Vacancy rates?

When I am going about looking for new rentals to purchase and I want to get a feel for the vacancy rates in a particular area, how do I go about finding those?

I doubt you would get much about occupancy from a residential real estate agent. If a commercial broker can't give you that information then they really aren't much chop at all. A good commercial broker should be able to provide you with:

• Colliers reports
• Yardi Matrix reports
• Other market reports that the brokerage sources or produces

Are you looking at single family homes or multifamily?

Google for “MyTown Market Report” or you can check website of big commercial brokers (CBRE,C&W,Marcus & Millichap,etc). If they have a local present in that area - they most likely have a market report which would have vacancy.

I asked a REA recently and he didn’t know how to do that. Is there  public data that could be searched somehow?
