Should I build a duplex, already own the land

I live in a rural town outside of Jackson, TN. I have been searching zillow for a year plus for a duplex to HH in a decent area. I currently live in a small single family home, which I own, with about 2 to 3 acres surrounding me in town. Should I just sub-divide the land and build a duplex on the land and move in one side, rent out the other, and then rent out my single family home? Has anyone had any experience/luck doing this?
