VRBO, Home Away, Airbnb experience?

The subject of doing airbnb rentals may have already been covered? If so, please direct me to the thread. If not, here is my question: My husband and I own a 17 acre piece of land. We also live on this land. We are toying with the idea of building some small summer rental cottages to rent out to tourists. We live right in between both parts of Acadia National Park, in Maine. My husband is a building contractor and can erect these fairly simply himself. We don't want to put in a septic, but instead use composting toilets. The big question is, how is the rental market for seasonal 1 week rentals in tourist areas for creating income?
