Building code consultant question

Hello,

I’m new to this and was wondering if anyone can give me their experience with code consultants...

I’m doing my first ground up with 9 units on a small lot, and given land constraints we are pushing the limits on code guidelines... 

My architect thinks the code consultant will save time and money in the end... we are still in development phase...

Any thoughts? Are they worth the cost?
