What degree should I pursue to get into real estate development!?

Hello BP Family,

I am a Marine Corps Veteran and I want to use the GI Bill to get more educated on real estate development. Can anyone recommend a specific major, certification, or school on the east cost (preferably around the NY Tri-State area).

It depends on what you want to do when you write "get into real estate." In PA, $150 for a couple online courses that you can take inside of a month and taking a test can get you a real estate license to be an agent. That could be one way you go.

I think learning the trades is much more valuable as a developer or investor. Being knowledgeable to recognize what a property needs and the cost of renovating or building it valuable. Doing the work yourself trades sweat equity for cash improving your return and helps you manage others working with you. You can establish your own team and business this way. Consider learning plumbing, carpentry, electrical for the basic skills. You can decide if it is worth getting a certification in those areas.

That depends on your current level of education, background and what you want to do. Get a job or become a Developer. There are several schools that offer online degrees in Real Estate and Real Estate Development so no need to be local. Certificates are and degrees are helpful but not required to become a developer but education certainly is. There are lots of ways to educate yourself but if you have GI Bill money available you should use that for Real Estate Development courses like MIT, Cornell, or General Real Estate like NY University etc.

I think Temple has a good real estate program and Penn State has a great MBA program (lots of Veterans were in my class!) and a real estate program.  When I did my MBA I concentrated in Finance (honestly that is mostly what development is) and real estate.  I love my real estate classes there.
