I just put a vacant lot under contract, and I'm going to be contracting our next house myself. Any tips for reducing costs or mistakes not to make?

Our second new construction project is coming up, and will actually be our personal residence. Not only will the process be more interesting and complex (we're having zoning/design issues already), but the design decisions will be more interesting, as this is for us and not to resell.

Hopefully I'll have the energy to do another thread on the topic...we can swap horror stories... :)
