Do You Encapsulate Your Crawlspace

If unfinished basements are usually not heated, cooled, sealed or encapsulated why is it now needed in crawlspaces?

What do you all do with your crawlspaces in the humid South East? Do you waterproof, encapsulate, or simply put down vapor barrier?

Have you found that well done vapor barrier and venting is enough? Is waterproofing and sealing crawlspace overkill?
