Looking for Strategy Advice: Buying a Texas STR From Abroad

Melinda Mahan
Posted

Hello,

I’m based in Europe but still visit my home state of Texas once a year for a few weeks. I’m considering buying a property either in the Texas wine region (hill country) or on a lake - something with strong short‑term rental potential that I can also use personally during my annual visit.

Cash‑flow isn’t my top priority, but I’d like the property to at least break even month‑to‑month if possible. Long‑term, this would be a lifestyle investment rather than a pure income play.

For those of you who invest in STRs in Texas—or who manage properties remotely—I’d love your insight on the best strategy for finding a home that fits these needs. Specifically, I’m trying to understand:

  • -How to identify the right markets within Texas wine country or lake communities
  • -What data points matter most when the goal is “break even” rather than maximizing profit
  • -How to evaluate properties remotely and avoid surprises
  • -Any unique challenges with STR regulations or management in these areas
  • -Tips for setting up reliable local management while living abroad

If you’ve done something similar or have experience with STRs in these regions, I’d really appreciate your perspective.
