Getting started with Real Estate Investing

Hi everyone,

I just joined the BiggerPockets community and am incredibly excited to be here. I am brand new to real estate investing—as in, I don't have a background in real estate investing and I'm starting completely from square one.

I live in California and would love to invest here if possible. I am just not sure if single/multi family real estate is better or other real estate investing options are better

If you were starting completely from scratch today, how would you approach it?

I'd love to get your insights on a few specific questions:

• Alternative Asset Classes: Besides standard residential houses and apartments, what niches are beginner-friendly? 
• Best California Markets for Niches: For those investing in California, what types of areas are best right now? Should I look locally for appreciation, or head inland to places like the Central Valley or Sacramento where these alternative strategies might have more breathing room?
• The BP Archives: With so much content on this site, where should a total novice start? Are there specific forum threads, articles, or classic podcast episodes you highly recommend?

I'm ready to dive into the forums, read the blogs, and absorb as much as I can. I appreciate any advice or direction you can throw my way!

Congrats on starting your journey!!

I would find meetups in your area and chat with people who are where you want to be. I grew up near San Francisco and moved to Reno, NV to live and invest. 

Wanted lower property taxes (that don't reassess on the sale), no state income tax, more landlord friendly, and still significant appreciation. 

If you're set on CA, definitely know the ins and outs of the laws and know a good attorney. Sac is a great market from what I've heard.
