Overpiad contactor

My husband was paying out contractor and by accident paid him for material that he ordered himself to make process faster. He sent email stating what exactly happened and how he overpaid him but contractor keeps on saying there is no overpayment and he doesn't want to meet to review everything together, even though audit and our documentation clearly says we overpaid him. Please advice what we should do in this situation? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
