I was in the building department yesterday and the clerks there told me that they have seen a big increase in building permits issued this month (a big increase from zero might not be much, but certainly better than nothing)

I take it as a very good sign if builders, or maybe it's homeowners, have decided it is safe to start building again.

For a long while, I'd look at the houses for sale and there would be a couple that made me say "holy cow that's cheap". That is no longer happening. Bargains no longer jump out, shouting and waving their arms. I take that as a good sign.

A couple of big businesses are opening new facilities here. I take that as a good sign.

Several large businesses have stopped renting and have purchased themselves a commercial building. I don't know if that is a good sign or not. They are showing confidence, but also, commercial has gotten too cheap to pass up.

Banks and mortgage companies are aggressively seeking customers. I take that as a good sign.

The economy is kind of like politicians. I am not interested in what they say. I am interested in what they actually do. I am watching the ground level real estate happenings and they give me hope, cause I tell you what: I am sure tired of this recession.

Below is a link where you can find the new building permits issued for your town. It's the Census Bureau website
