How to protect myself when hiring contractors?

Mostly for home building projects...

I know I can do research and look at reviews and complaints if there are any.

How do I make sure they work quickly? How do I make sure they won't stick a bunch of change orders on me? How do I make sure they will come back and fix mistakes if they make them?

I recommend Home Advisor. We found a great handyman that way.

Also, ask locally. If you have any local REI clubs or real estate agents you know. Word of mouth goes a long way in the industry and see who's name comes up the most.

And finally, contracts are important. Even for small jobs!
