Need advice on getting prequaled

Hi All, Trying to get started with acquiring my first rental property, but am being challenged by lenders. Called one major bank and a small regional bank -- both won't prequal me bc I have a short sale from 2/11. Don't want to keep knocking on doors and having credit checks done only to get rejects... Would appreciate suggestions. Gratefully, P
