Debt to Income Ratios

Im trying to get my finances in order before I apply for a mortgage next year. I have no debt so my only payment would be a housing payment. Do lenders use .43 DTI or is it lower seeing as it's only a housing payment? I've heard .28, .30 etc. but I don't see why it matters if that's overall DTI or just housing payment. My credit is excellent.
