Questions on How to complete Philadelphia NPT on Tax Center

John Yoo
Posted

Hi Family,

I recently received a noticed from the City of Philadelphia stating that I have not filed a Net Profits Tax (NPT) returns for the last five years.  I didn't realize this was a form that I needed to file every year since purchasing my investment property, and now, until this is filed, I'm unable to renew my business license for the property.

After reviewing the form online, I'm finding it pretty confusing since there are no resources I can find anywhere on the City of Philadelphia's website to complete this form.  For example (in highlights), I'm assuming this is where I list the actual purchase price (in Philadelphia)?  Then, what figure do I put on "Total Everywhere"?   Next,  on the line at "Rented Property", what information are they asking for?

I'm clueless as to what I need to in these lines.  I'm assuming the second line is what my property was assessed at by the City of Philadelphia?

For this last worksheet, would I find this information on my Schedule E on my Federal tax return?

If anyone has previously completed this online form via Philadelphia's Tax Center, and would be willing to share a sample form or screenshots (obviously with all personal identifiable information removed), I'd really appreciate it.  I'm just looking for guidance on how to properly complete it.

Thanks in advance for your help!

@John Yoo unfortunately, Philly gov websites are not user friendly and cause a lot of confusion. I let my CPA handle it each year with all of my filings but many people do run into license renewal problems - even when they have paid their taxes and filed correctly. On the other hand, not having a valid rental license can lead to significant problems and courts will not accept anything as an excuse. I suggest getting guidance to handle that and learning so you can manage it going forward -- or having your CPA do it if you have one. Feel free to reach out if you need to connect to someone who can sort this out for you.
