Whats a CPA Worth

How much do you pay for your tax returns and advice? How do you justify paying a CPA $3k vs. $1k? What value add does a CPA provide to justify an additional $2k? A might be able to get a very good CPA at $700 or so but would I get a good ROI for a CPA at $2k-$3k?
