Cost of a Good CPA to Handle Your Taxes

Daniel Sabato
Posted

What does a good CPA cost when tax time rolls around? Now I already know that this is a "it depends" kind of situation and I understand that. I'm just looking to get a ballpark idea of what would be an insane number. Is it generally billed hourly or all one fixed cost? What would those numbers look like for someone like me that has a full-time job, part time job, is a full-time student, and has a few investment properties. Thanks!

You pretty much answered your own question - it depends.

Some professionals charge hourly, some by the form, some as a fixed price.

For you, the numbers would look like anything from $130 (TurboTax) to $10,000 depending on who you sign up with.  This isn't a question you can crowd source.  Unfortunately, you're going to have to reach out to some people and inquire.

Also, if you're looking for help for the 2019 tax year, you may want to consider just putting yourself on extension and inquiring after the 15th.  Many tax pros at this point are only answering their phones for current customers as the filing deadline is 3 weeks away.

If you're looking for help for 2020 and beyond, maybe give it a couple of weeks before reaching out.
